System242-gt - Dynaudio 6.5" 2 Way Component Speakers Review

Holy **** these are the best car component speakers I've ever heard! Running 2 sets (front/rear) off a 4x100w McIntosh amp. Crystal clear at all volumes.... extremely responsive..... slamming mids..... musically neutral.... I keep getting told (besides how great they sound) how much clarity there is. You'll hear the slighest sounds; parts of a song you've never heard before. Great for all types of music: rock, hip-hop/rap, house/trance. Yeah they're expensive. Yeah you CAN hear the difference!
Negative: Since they are so clear and accurate, any bad recordings or low quality mp3/CD burns will result in hearing the static/distortion/etc.
Just make sure you're running a good amp to these with lots of clean power; upwards of 100w and low distortion.

Focal Access 165 A3 6.5-Inch 3-Way Component Speaker Kit Review

Can't say anything but wow! These speakers put out incredible sound and are super loud. I have these hooked up to a rockford fosgate amp and it is like listening to music for the first time. You can make out every note and percussion hit. Despite being in Focal's entry level access line, they sound as good as speakers costing 2 to 3 times as much. If you are a true audiophile the tweeters might be a little bright, but flipping the switch on the crossover to -3db will knock most of it away. They also get a little less bright as the speakers break in. These are completely worth the money if you want true high quality sound.

Discover the world of Focal sound quality with the 165 A3. This 6.5-inch three-way kit adds a 4-inch midrange speaker to the A1's offerings, so it can deliver even more Focal sound--extreme dynamics, punchy bass and accurate treble, with an expansive soundstage to fill your vehicle with crystal-clear audio. The 6.5-inch woofers boast a one-inch voice coil with excellent power handling, a high-sensitivity magnet, and butyl rubber surround for durability and powerful bass. The aluminum inverted dome tweeters provide clear and accurate treble, and can be set at three different levels using the crossovers, to provide the ideal relative volume for its install location. Experience Focal's "Spirit of Sound" with flawless imaging, and uncommon detail and dynamics.

The 165 A3 Woofer and 4-inch Midrange The 6.5-inch Access woofer and 4-inch Midrange are both built with a light and stiff cone, coupled with a butyl rubber surround, offering a degree of quality never before encountered at this price level. The special all weather cone will perform in hot and humid environments without distortion or warping. The woofer's power handling and reliability are remarkable thanks to deliberately oversized voice coils, resulting in deep and accurate bass.
Painted DIN chassis, 20% glass fiber filled ABS material This strong, rigid chassis is non-magnetic and nonresonant.
All weather woven glass fiber cone The durable, humidity-resistant cone provides dynamic bass and precise midrange.
Phase plug Phase plug designs control midrange out of the listening axis, for added accuracy.
25mm (1") voice coil (woofer) Larger voice coils provide excellent power handling, which in turn provides a tight, well-defined low-end.
85mm (3-1/3") magnet (woofer) High sensitivity where everything begins.
Voice coil cooling system Provides reliable, consistent performance, no matter what kind of abuse your system dishes out.

The TN 44 tweeter Aluminum inverted dome tweeter technology offers significant rigidity and lowers distortion. Ideal air coupling, the main advantage of the inverted dome shape, allows a very wide soundstage and very accurate image, unlike a convex (traditional) dome that is moving more on its periphery than on its center, causing a weak coil/dome energy transfer.
Aluminum inverted dome tweeter Provides accurate treble with the utmost efficiency.
20mm (13/16") ferrofluid voice coil Excellent power handling and heat dispersal.

Crossover The 12/12dB/octave (300Hz-4kHz) separated Access crossover fully reflects Focal's philosophy, which is oriented toward product application and uncompromising quality requirements. Polypropylene capacitors bring to these products high and distortion-free dynamics. Level control available in two-way systems allows refining the tuning of the tweeter in all locations.
Adjustable tweeter level Adjust the tweeter level control according to location (3 level settings) with a simple switch.
Air core inductors Insensitive to parasite interferences.

165 A1 Technical Specifications

About Focal Innovation is key to the Focal sound. For 25 years, through the pursuit of constant new advances in technology, Focal has been able to develop a harmonious research and production system that enables us to continuously improve our products and introduce new ones, all with the same goal: the most faithful reproduction of music. The latest example of this philosophy has been the introduction of Beryllium in our top products, which has become a new reference worldwide.
Constantly pursuing innovation is the embodiment of Focal's corporate strategy and that goal involves every facet of the company. From R&D to production to quality control, all our teams are fully involved and focused on this one objective: continual progress through innovation.
In today's world, where globalization and the pursuit of chasing cheaper production methods have tempted most companies to splinter their organizations, Focal has opted to be different. Though we have grown tremendously through the years, our R & D, headquarters and manufacturing facilities remain based in Saint-Etienne (France).
We have learned that true innovation is not simply work carried out at the research department, but is also a question of comprehensive management and the direct control of the different production phases. The example of Beryllium is a significant one. Only three years ago no one was capable of producing tweeters with a pure Beryllium foil dome. Focal innovated a solution based on research and the invention of specific in-house industrial processes.
Such an approach has given us an important advantage over our competitors: we develop our own technology, which allows us to consistently provide true quality production using our own methods. In 2008, the Focal Car range gets richer with a new amplifier line: Solid. This perfectly sums up Focal's commitment for high musical quality from the entry-level contrary to the general tendency that consists in looking for the cheapest prices in priority instead of performance. The result is music standardization and trivialization, which is highly prejudicial to sound quality. Focal cultivates this difference. This is the core strength of our brand and our company. This is the Spirit of Sound. We want to share this with you... It is our Utopia

Focal Polyglass 165 CVX 6.5-Inch Coaxial Speaker Kit Review

I didn't find many reviews when researching these speakers, so I thought I'd write one after having them about a month. I highly recommend them, and I'm not sure they're burned-in yet! I like the pivoting tweeter, as it does send the highs up to my ears. The tweeter's angle is set and rotates one full turn around the pole. The clarity, detail and separation of these speakers is great! Caution though-Crutchfield said they'd fit my car w/o adapters, etc, but only 2 (opposing) screws fit, but I think that's fine, as the basket is strong plastic. There are plenty of holes to chose from on the basket's edge. The small manual lists them as 165mm/6.5". They suggest "a few weeks' run-in"(burn in) period. Nominal power is listed as 70W, max is 140W and response is 60-20kHz(+/-?) at 4 ohms w/93db sensitivity. They come with hardware, grills and even 1 small Focal window decal, which I proudly sport.

The 165 CVX is a 6.5 inch coaxial speaker from the Polyglass line of Focal speakers and features an innovative built-in 12db/octave audiophile crossover, which adds no mounting depth to the design. This crossover is constructed using polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors for an extremely dynamic and neutral sound. The unique Polyglass cone is made from a layer of hollow glass micro-spheres over a cellulose pulp which greatly increases the rigidity of the cone without adding weight. It has an Aluminum inverted dome tweeter on a rotating swivel mount for easy adjustments and controlled directivity.

Infinity KAPPAFOUR 125W x 4 Full Range Class D Amplifier Review

This amp does exactly as advertised. I put amp in my 1993 4x4 Ford Explorer. Since I don't have a super cap, I connected a high density AGM battery directly to it with 8 AWG cables less than 2 feet long and connected an oscilloscope to the amp's power terminals to monitor the battery voltage. I connected four Kappa 682.9CF 4-Ohm speakers that can handle 100 watts, and proceeded to jam. The voltage level wiggled about 0.3 Volts at most. Moving the scope to the speaker terminals confirmed that the RMS voltage of the audio signal was exceeding 100 Watts and I could see clipping going beyond that level but the Kappa speakers popped before the clipping started. I tried both the stock wiring which is either 16 or 18 AWG wire and 12 AWG fine wire to the speakers. None of which made any difference. I could be wrong but I don't think 125 Watts is that much over 100 Watt speakers that they should so easily pop so it doesn't look good for those 5x7 speakers but I've yet to look into it and that will be another review. I guess I'm asking too much from a small speaker. So, I have two issues with this amp. First, the amp has a low frequency boost for two of the channels, and none for the other two...shucks! I discovered that this boost really accentuates the low low frequencies and makes these Kappa speakers sound quite impressive although not much beyond a high listening level because these lows cause them to pop excessively as per noted above. So I wish I could do the same for the other two channels. Bummer. The head unit has low frequency boost also but not as low as this amp's low frequency gain has control over. The second issue is that this amp has a prominent hiss. The noise comes from the input gain stage because turning the input gain down to half way minimizes this hiss to be on the edge of acceptable. At this level, the hiss is noticeable only when the engine is off and there is nothing playing. Comparing this amp to my over 20-year old Alpine 3553 as far as audio quality is concerned is on par with the Kappa amp with accurate frequency response but that old Alpine has absolutely no hiss even at maximum input gain, but to be fair, it's only 35 Watts/channel at 4 Ohms. On the other hand, it's half the size of the Alpine and I guess it's kind of hard to make class-D amps noise free at the cost of size. That's OK, I fortunately managed the noise level. By the way, disconnecting my head unit from the Kappa amp did not affect this hiss. My head unit is the Kenwood KDC994 which has 4-Volt outputs. For those of you who mentioned that your speakers pop or click when your new head unit switched from song to song, it's likely because you're using the stock amp or bought an amp that has its inputs not floating or not at 0 Volts. My stock amp has a 4-Volt offset on its inputs and my speakers popped when each song ended and again when each song started and my Kenwood forced the offset to 0 Volts. That popping went away with this new amp and my Alpine amp. Finally, the amp seems well built and the adjustment controls and switches have a high quality, smooth feel to them while adjusting them. I'm happy with the head unit and the amp, but obviously, not so much with the Kappa speakers since they popped at a level I didn't expect. The battery is a high capacity AGM marine type 23 AH battery. I could run the amp for about 4 hours before the battery Voltage dropped to about 10.6 Volts which is essentially the depletion point. Oh yeah, one final note. I couldn't really address thermal issues because it's cold this time of year but the amp never got warm enough to notice. I don't think I can push it good and hard with these speakers because they pop to easily. I admit, I am a bit bass happy when it comes to a good song that benefits from it but I tone it down on easy songs, I promise. My test music consisted of highly dynamic music from rock, classical, Celtic, country, and Christian, much of which had extensible deep bass instruments, the kind that shake your pant leg because the speaker is next to your leg. I did some rap which the speakers just could not handle. I dropped a star due to the noise issue. Otherwise, it's a great amp, at least in the winter time.

I have this amp paired with two Kappa Infinity 120.9w and wow this amp exceeded my expectations, especially for $260 shipped through Amazon Prime. One odd thing about this amp is sometimes it will emit a high pitch squeal for a second or two on startup.
After two or three hours of nonstop bass cranked up relatively high, this amp was still cool to the touch (w00t Class-D)
I would highly recommend this amp along with two 120.9w for anyone interested in getting an amazing system for around $600.
