(More customer reviews)I own two of these sold as the DRS-1 through another vendor (cctvimports). I hope someday soon insurance companies will give discounts to drivers who have these mounted in their car as it helps them as well.
Sorry Emanuel - you must have a malfunctioning unit. These DO records in higher resolution at 5fps and the image is MUCH better in spite of the slower frame rate. I've seen a couple of true HD mobile recorders (720p and 1080p) but they lack the features which make this one stand out:
- ability to record audio or select to disable audio
- 3 axis motion detection (used to trigger recording 'events')
- selectable resolution and frame rate
- GPS tracks position and speed
- can export screen shots or video
About one year after installing one of these in my car a dog ran out from in front of a parked SUV and into my right front wheel. At high-resolution and 5 frames per second only three frames showed the animal - enough to show the insurance adjuster what damaged my car (and the dog owner couldn't claim the dog was on a leash as the video showed no leash). All that was CLEAR at 35mph in just three frames!
Just beware of a couple things. In states where radar detectors are illegal you may get pulled over as police will think this is a radar detector. I guess they don't yet realize citizens who wish to protect themselves can have "dash cams" too. And with that - in Maryland with the recent case against a vehicle operator who recorded audio with the video of a traffic stop - Maryland state police are arguing a traffic stop is not a "public conversation" therefore subject to state wiretapping laws making recording of a conversation illegal without both parties consent. So until they are overturned and put in their place you may want to disable the audio recording if used in Maryland.
