I agree with another reviewer who thought it sat back too far. Also, it doesn't accomodate a hitch lock. Pretty odd; I guess I don't have that much faith in my fellow man. I ended up getting the thickest elongated padlock I could find and used it as my hitch lock. I had no problems. It's a little awkward to fit in but still doable by one person. It's a very good product

My guess is that it will fit almost all autos with cross bar roof racks. Loads of space, does seem a but long, the 1600 is a bit shorter and might look more proportional to my Pathifinder, this 1700 is probably best for the Tahoes, Escalades, and Yukons out there. In any case, awesome product, and Amazon has the best price and arrived (via some shipping company, not UPS) in about three days, pretty fast. No shipping issues for me.

Thule 611 Boxter Rooftop Cargo Box Review

(More customer reviews)Ordered this in the blind off Thule's recommendation for my 2010 Volkswagen TDi Sportswagon and 2005 Honda Odyssey. The box was shipped via ground and arrived in great condition. I ordered the areo bars and feet for my new Sportwagon but have the sqaure bars on my Odyssey. The box fits both with easy and rides nicely on both vehicles. The nice feature that Thule did not, nor any of the websites that I used to conduct my research, play up how easy it is to put on, much less swap between two different vehicles.
On the bottom of the cargo box, there are sliding anchors that allow you to place the box on either type of bars. This was covered in the all of the videos and write ups I could find, but the interesting thing is that they slide to accommodate at a minimum of around 21" and a maximum 36" distance between the front and rear bars. So there is no need to have both vehicles setup the same or worry about having to reposition the feet. Once you have the box positioned, then you secure it to the bars by twisting the knobs inside the box.
Truly a well engineered piece of equipment like all the other systems and components I have purchased through Thule. I believe this box is well worth the money and am glad I went with this box over the Atlantis model. I certainly do recommend this box to others!

My friend had one installed on his Audi A3. When I purchased my BMWX3 I knew I would have garage clearance issues if I went with a cargo box. I was tired of putting wet and dirty snowboard equipment in my trunk space and knew I had to get a cargo box to enjoy my weekends away. Low and behold, Yakima releases this extra low wonder. I snagged the last one at my local rack store. I did hesitate with the price at first. However, being able to park in your garage with the roof car box is priceless. This box is the widest box Yakima offers, so don't expect to install anything else on top unless you have some really long cross bars. Also this box is really quiet on the wind noise. I have experienced many different setups for roof top cargos, and by far this is one of the quietest without the need of any modifications (fairings/strings/bungie/etc).

Thule 667TT Excursion Rooftop Cargo Box Review

(More customer reviews)Perfect size for our small SUV, (Hyundai Tucson). I'm sure there's an MPG loss, but it's in the noise and less than running the air conditioner. It's reasonably sturdy, unnoticeably quiet and has a couple of spring loaded devices that hold it open. From the pictures, I expected something a little more "squat" but it's "right" for the car and easily sits far enough back to nominally fit the aerodynamic profile of the car, such as it is. Doesn't look as "dorky" as some of the others on the market. It's also light enough that I've been able to hang it on the wall in the garage.
The pleasant surprise is how roomy the carrier is, more than I imagined.
I'm not to crazy about the "universal" mounting system that hooks to the roof rack crossbars. It's solid, but has four knobs that stick up into the carrier. It's just a little crude, but effective and in most cases wouldn't be a purchase decision factor. I'll probably cut some bolts to the proper length and install self locking acorn nuts, but that's just personal preferance and would work since I leave the carrier mounted on the crossbars even when it's off the vehicle. If you're mounting to factory crossbars, the Thule system works well, though you'll probably want to install some thin padding on the metal hardware. Also a small handle on the top at the back would help to open it and I may add one. One person can place it on the vehicle, and though it's light it's a little awkward and much easier with two. When I install it myself, I put a packing blanket on the roof rack first to protect the surface of the car, then slide it out from under before tightening down the carrier.
Comes with a 5 year warranty too. I missed that in the product info.

About Thule To say that Thule’s beginnings in the U.S. were humble would be an understatement. Thule Atlantis Cargo Box Review

(More customer reviews)The Atlantis 1600 is a well designed roof-top storage device. The model I own is the Mopar equivalent made by Thule for Mopar. Installation of this cargo box is easy. It attaches to your roof rack crossbars with four adjustable clamps. Just place the cargo box onto your roof rack positioning it's attaching clamps over the crossbars of your roof rack. Each of the four clamps move forward and aft to allow for precise positioning onto your crossbars. Once properly positioned, attachment to the roof rack is completed by turning the clamps round locking knob located on the inside of the unit. The Maximum center to center cross bar distance is 35.5 inches. Because the clamp front to back distance is easily adjustable by sliding the clamps forward or aft before tightening, the Minimum center to center crossbar distance is 24 inches. The port to starboard clamp width distance is fixed at 26.5 inches.
Inside the Atlantis 1600 (16 cubic feet of cargo space) has a very decent amount of interior room, but the 16.3" published height does not extend over the entire 74" length of the box. It tapers at the front so less parasite drag is created at highway speeds. This taper reduces the overall height inside. Also there is some rounding from the top to the sides of the box causing a further reduction of the 16.3" overall height in the published 36" width. These areas of height reduction may be a factor if you plan on putting fixed height rigid containers into the cargo box like I do. For this reason, and because of some tailing off of the cargo box floor both forward and aft, I recommend inspecting one of these in person to determine if it will support your cargo requirements. If you plan on using containers, bring them with you to the store to see if they are properly supported by the forward and aft sections of the floor, if they fit from front to back/side to side, and for total height.
This Atlantis 1600 opens from either side making egress into it very easy. Both sides are opened with a keyed lock that retains the key until the lid is down and at least partially engaged with the lock-down mechanism. (One caution! Make sure that the lid is securely seated forward to aft onto the ENTIRE base before removing the key for traveling. There are two guide pieces located on the inside of the lid to help with this and three securing points on each side of the cargo box base that must be engaged for a positive lock-down. Failure to do this correctly may allow the lid to be torn off by winds at highway or lesser speeds!) It has two internal spring loaded arms that hold open the lid while accessing the inside of the box. I use mine on a 2005 VW Jetta wagon. On this vehicle it fits both length and width perfectly utilizing nearly the entire roof area thereby maximizing rooftop storage capacity.
On my Jetta, traveling down the road is effortless with the Atlantis. I don't notice any unusual noise. The wind resistance must be negligible because no dead-on high profile vehicle characteristics are noticeable at highway speeds. The clamps keep the box securely in place. Even when empty, at just 42 pounds dry weight, the Atlantis feels solid while traveling.
One shortfall of my unit is found in its corrugated style floor. For me the floor material is not thick enough and/or the corrugations are not aggressive enough. This attribute makes the floor flex somewhat under load and seems weaker that one would expect for its current $500 price tag. Putting plywood on the floor of the box can eliminate the problem, but the weight of the plywood subtracts from the total payload weight, which for Thule cargo boxes, trends at 110 pounds.
In conclusion, the Atlantis 1600 is a very convenient way to store up to 110 pounds of additional cargo for your trips. It's light and installs and removes quickly, which can be easily accomplished by one person. Except for some apparent lack of strength in the floor, the box is generally well designed and easy to access. It travels well with no unusual noise or wind resistance. Its cost seems a bit high for the amount of raw material used to manufacture the box. The type of cargo to be carried should be considered before buying the Atlantis 1600. Overall, performance is very good.

Yakima SkyBox Pro 16s Rooftop Cargo Box (Titanium) Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a cargo box that would fit the new style Subaru Outback (2010 and up) without interfering with the rear hatch, which apparently is a problem with the new integrated roof racks on the Outback. I found the Skybox 16s was one of the few boxes that would fit without hitting anything.
The box arrived about 3 weeks after placing the order with free shipping. I put the box on the car in about 15 minutes without reading the instructions, adjusted it once to straighten it out and it has been great ever since. The only tricky part was getting the key removed from the inside the box when I was unpacking it, but that was me not thinking it through. The shape and titanium color looks great on the white Subaru too, I'm glad I didn't get the cheaper unpainted version.
I've lost about 1.5 miles per gallon, which is a little better than what I expected. There is a tiny whoosh at speed, but the wind noise on the highway is actually much less than I had anticipated, and truthfully I don't hear it unless I slide the sunroof interior visor open. I haven't experienced any drama with crosswinds yet. The aerodynamics seem to be quite well sorted out.
The mechanisms in the box are ingenious with the duel side openings, all the hardware works great, and appears to be sturdy. The tie downs and spider web bungee all work well, the thin neoprene pad it comes with may have to be glued down or something, as it seems to roam a little. I've had many Thule products in the past and always found them a little less ergonomic than the Yakima stuff, and this box reinforces that opinion.
Check your skis first, if you have cross country or old school long non-parabolic downhill skis you will have a problem. My 18x-something cm length skis are a tight fit, I have to wedge them a little sideways. I guess that's the penalty for fitting the Subie. The box is quite tall, so I can get quite a bit of cargo in there too.
Very satisfied with the cargo box and would highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)This product is straight forward easy to install as advertised. My roof rails are foolishly body colored rather than something more wear forgiving. The soft rubber mounts allow for tight installation and full removal with no marks left or paint abrasion.
The weight gives you confidence that it'll take the load. This sucker is solid.
If I had one gripe it would be that the gear for tightening/loosening requires too many turns.
If I needed a second set, I would not hesitate to buy another set.

SportRack A26395 Aero 1300 Roof Box Review

(More customer reviews)Much better than expected. I've only had this on my Toyota 4runner for a few weeks. Does not feel very heavy, nor does it affect my fuel/mileage so far. Easy to assemble. Also very easy to take on and off any standard crossbar.
The picture is actually inaccurate. Go to the officieal Sportrack website and type in ABS 1300 Ski model A26395. Or just type in the model number. You will see the actual picture is a much longer box. The typical Yakima or Thule Box that is similar sized will usually cost you about $350 to $500, you can buy the exact same one for only $200 on Amazon, under a mistaken picture. I am surprised they are selling this box at this price. I think it might be the price of the picture, which is a smaller dimension roof cargo box. The smaller box would not have fit my snowboard/skis, but the one that was shipped (model A26365) for $200 fit my gear perfect.
75" is definitely the length of the box in case you were wondering if it would be too long for your vehicle. Also, when the Sportrack box came in through UPS, i saw a "thule" symbol on the box.. Could it be the same company? who knows.. but the quality is exactly the same. Good lock on the box too. Oh and the model that came is one that opens on the passenger side only (for sidewalk loading). This was quite a deal! highly recommended!!

SportRack A90095 Explorer Roof Box Review

First the material it is made of is thin and flimsy. It is certainly not as strong as some of the boxes made from ABS plastic. If you park in the sun for any time the plastic softens to the point where you may have trouble getting the hinges to engage to hold the top up. Another result of the softened plastic is the sagging of the hinge side of the lower portion of the box. This causes the top to sag down slightly reducing the clearance for loading items.
Another issue is the assembly. It was painfully cumbersome, and I am very mechanically inclined. It's definitely a two man job, one to hold the top while the other attaches and tightens the nuts and bolts.
Attaching to my vehicle (04 Dodge Durango) was a pain as well. The height of the vehicle made it challenging enough but attaching the "U" bolts on the hinge side was a real pain. If you have a smaller vehicle like a sedan or a Subaru Outback or something like that it may be easier
But, this thing is huge and holds a lot. We had 2 larger rollaway suitcases, two large duffle bags, 2 sleeping bags and 2 pillows and had room for coats and toiletry bags. It really hold quite a bit. But one of the biggest advantages is has is the price. For the cost of a competing unit from yakithule you can by 5 of these things.
I highly recommend this unit if your budget is tight, especially if you can get someone else to assemble and install it...

Thule Sidekick Cargo Box Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this with some skepticism, having read other reviews that gave it low marks, and also having bought Thule products in the past and cursed them as I tried assembling and installing them, what with missing pieces and the like.
Happily, this box is fine. It does seem flimsy when you're assembling it, and it even seems that way when it's open on top of the car. It seems to be engineered to be as light as possible, which it is, and that can be unnerving until you get it fastened down and locked closed.
Assembly: It's awkward. It took two of us, me and my 2 year old! Seriously. It's a bit hairy for one person to get it right, since you have to match the hinges with the sides of the "clam shell", and their fit doesn't seem quite right until you tighten them up well. Still, it went OK, about 20 minutes for me to do, far better than a Thule roof racks I installed some years back, where I was dealing with bent and missing parts. If you do this alone, you need to brace it well at an angle as you hook the top and bottom together. Much easier with two people.
Installation: Dead easy on the factory roof rack. (We have a Pontiac Aztek.) THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY ADDITIONAL BRACKETS, though when viewing ads for this, you might think so at first glance. The package includes 4 U-brackets which attach to your roof racks and are held inside by hand-swivel bolts (whatever they're called). One thing I added while doing the installation was to put duct tape over the inside holes for the U-brackets. There are several holes in each sequence, and you only use two out of 4 or 5; the others are exposed. Covering with tape might help keep spray out.
Performance: Pretty good! We drove 2300 miles with this unit, of which about 300 were in driving rain. During the worst rain, we did have dampness and some droplets of water at the bottom front inside, but the gear was sitting up on ridges and was fine - bag in front was damp but not wet. If you have cloth bags that press to the very bottom, I'd put them in plastic if you'll be hitting heavy rain (and ours was VERY heavy, and at 70 mph driving speed).
We noticed an increase in wind noise at high speeds, and in our rough tests, it knocked about 2 mpg off our gas mileage at 75 mph, but on a 50 mph stretch of several hundred miles we couldn't tell a difference.
Removal takes literally five minutes. You undo (by hand) four pairs of swivel bolts, and lift it right off the roof. Reinstallation is about the same.
Overall, we're extremely happy with it and very glad we bought it.
