Sony DRN-XM01H2 - Satellite radio Review

Yes, really. In my experience, Sony makes good stuff, mostly. This DRN-XM radio is no exception. Yes, this radio is not the latest, feature-rich device around, but the damn thing does extremely well in picking up signals, even in my downstairs office where the signal must penetrate at least a foot of concrete. I am using the shark fin antenna and I have it stuck sideways on my metal filing cabinet which is about 18 feet from the basement window. I've used the smaller, low profile antenna down here also and it works just as well. I have another shark fin antenna on the radio installed in my pickup truck, and it very, very rarely loses a signal. The signal drops out a bit sometimes on the radio in the basement when I turn on the microwave which is a foot away from it, but that's not typical. I have 5 Sony DRN-XM02 radios and 1 DRN-XM01 radio. They look identical and work the same, but the DRN-XM02 has a fancier remote control on it and a whiter screen vs. the bluer screen of the DRN-XM01 and smaller remote with less buttons on it. I ended up paying for a lifetime subscription for one of my radios, which is great because I hate recurring, never-ending charges to my credit card, but I don't think XM/Sirius offers this option any longer. I've tried newer XM radios and they seem to have problems with keeping a consistently strong signal due to their tiny antennas. You folks can keep your newer XM radios with crappy signal strength and features that I'd never really care to use on a regular basis...I'll keep my Sony DRN-XM radios.

SONY Mono 1-Channel Amplifier (XM3001SXD) Review

SONY Mono 1-Channel Amplifier (XM3001SXD)

This the last style amp Sony came out with that is worth a you know what. It is a true Class D amp. I even had it tested back in 02. I have to find the paper but at 14.4v at 1ohm it cranked out a little over 1200watts. 970 something of pure undistorted power. I have one of these in both my cars now. On 3 12's I hit 156.6db in a competition. I have ran this amp for 4 plus years without a prob. I have even dropped it to a 0.6 load for a month to see if it would handle it and it did without a hiccup. I would reccommend this for anybody who is on a budget and need some power!!

Sony XSL120B5D Box-Dual SubWoofer Review

On Black Friday of 2008, I got these subs plus an 800 watt Xplod amp from Circuit City for $180, after tax. After barely squeezing them into the trunk of my '99 Ford Escort LX, I hooked them up using 8 gauge wire for power and ground to the amp, and high-strand 10 gauge to the speakers. At 340 watts RMS, these things pound! The entire interior of my car rattles; while running a test that slowly increases the frequency, you can hear different components of the car vibrate. They seem to like 48 Hz, +/- 2 Hz, but that could just be the settings on my amp. At 48 Hz, my Garmin Nuvi 270 is unusable (when you go to touch it, it pounds at your finger because of the vibrations, while tilting upwards on its mount). With the right song, they're ear-splitting, and will give me headaches after less than five minutes (even though I'm used to them). The excursion isn't the best, so you don't feel the pressure as much as the actual shock of the hit (it feels like a mild full body massage, if you have longer hair, you can actually feel it vibrating). Outside the car, the sound carries, but you hear the bass more than you feel it. In other words, they're cop-friendly. A larger amp might change this, however. For a first-time setup that'll impress most of your friends that didn't dump more than $500 into a *good* subwoofer setup, this isn't bad. The sound quality is OK, songs with a strong beat sound better than those with a fast one (rap vs. trance/techno). They're designed for low frequencies, thus, if you don't have good speakers to handle the 80-180 Hz range, you might feel like you're missing something. Beware, though, the box is enormous; fitting it into my trunk took some planning, a flat tire would make me extra-miserable, and a small child would barely be able to fit in the trunk with the box. The tradeoff, however, is excellent sounding, head-throbbing bass.

Pros: Start-up is under 5 seconds, Nav, DVD player, IPOD integration is great for the most part, Blue tooth, radio tuner has many presets and even has ability to search regular FM for genre specific stations (great for traveling). Buttons are large and it feels very user friendly and there aren't a lot of layers to get through when trying to switch through your sources.
Cons: Sirius Satellite radio integration is not good! It only displays 1 line and 8 characters and scrolls. In order to get all the information typically provided by satellite radio you need to hit the Display button 4 times (while waiting for scrolling time) to get the radio station name, song name, artist, and channel number. This is just not acceptable at this price level. Sony's website states "seamless" satellite radio integration, I don't quite understand that.
Second con is with the IPOD, but when your listening to a song and you want to go back through the layers to the album then artist etc, it doesn't let you. It will make you start at the beginning of your library and have to dive back into the artist then album to get back to where an ipod would normally go with one click. Kind of difficult when you just want to change albums by the same artist or even when you want to skip from track 2 to 10 without pressing seek 8 times.
Last con I care to discuss, SENSE ME software is only written for windows, and I don't have a windows computer, leaving this function of the radio completely useless for me.
This radio is going back this week, as I have called Sony and they have no answers for any updates in the future. Check my video review out as it was too big for amazons site:
