JL HD 600/4 Review

After paying this much for an amp, my expectations were quite high.
The amp exceeded every expectation I had.
First- The build quality is absolutely top rate. The removable connectors fit very tightly. The removable control panel has a positive lock so it can not vibrate or make noise. The RCA inputs are of excellent quality. A nice touch is that you can mount the amp on either side. This was nice because in my installation it worked better to have the back side facing up.
The next thing I observed after the installation was how low the noise floor really was. I could not hear it. The noise I could barely hear was actually coming from the source deck. I measured the noise floor at -109 Db with an Audio Precision Portable 1. That is the best I have ever measured on a car audio device. The ground isolated RCA inputs are a nice touch. No ground loops are possible.
In my installation I am using it to power a set of JBL 660GTi speakers in bi-amp mode.
I was worried that the anti-clipping circuitry or being a full digital amp would color the sound. I had nothing to worry about. The sound is very smooth and the transients are sharp and clear, but not harsh. When driven hard, I could detect the anti-clipping circuitry activating, but it was not too objectionable.
I was surprised that the amp is quite efficient. The fuse size is only 50A, for a 600 watt RMS amp.
I am very satisfied with this purchase.

"Small" is not the real story here.Making an amplifier small is great, of course... but not if power and sound quality are sacrificed. This is why our engineering team focused on achieving world-class fidelity first, and then on making our HD amplifiers amazingly powerful, efficient and small. These efforts led to a remarkable switching amplifier technology called Single Cycle ControlTM, which allows all of these goals to be achieved. This exclusive core amplifier technology is mated to our regulated, intelligent power supply (R.I.P.S.), advanced thermal management systems and a full complement of studio-grade processing features to put the all-new HD amplifiers in a performance class all their own. We invite you to sonically compare the HD amplifiers to any amplifier, at any price... We think you will quickly discover that all the old amplifier compromises have suddenly vanished. Patented Single Cycle Control switching technology corrects output in each and every switching cycle (over 400,000 times per second) for pristine power delivery. Studio-Grade Signal Processing.A full complement of expertly executed signal processing features make HD's flexible in application and a joy to tune in a variety of system designs. Advanced Rollback Protection and RealSink.Real, cast aluminum finned heat sinks and our "never-quit" rollback circuitry eliminate annoying thermal shutdown events.Remote Level Control (HD-RLC). With the addition of an HD-RLC you can control the overall level of the amplifier (or amplifiers) from the front of your vehicle.R.I.P.S. System. The remarkable R.I.P.S. System ensures consistent power delivery over a wide range of battery voltages and load impedances. Differential-Balanced InputsGreatly reduce noise and provide compatibility with a wide range of sources, including most OEM systems. HD Amplifiers have two mounting options to ease in installation and can also be stacked with an optional stacking kit.

Boss Audio DD2600 Diablo Class D Monoblock Power Amplifier Review

Boss Audio DD2600 Diablo Class D Monoblock Power Amplifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
-Amp runs cool, exceptionally efficient. Runs cooler pushing a signal than at idle
-All the filters you need to integrate a subwoofer into your system
-Sturdy. A machined chunk of heavy, extruded aluminum
-Selectable input level (2V-8V or 100mV-2V) built in
-Sinister old-school looks
-PCB well built, tidy component layout
-A lot of amp for your dollar
Cons:
-Sinister old-school looks
-Transistor-based PWM is effective, but certainly isn't state of the art
-Ultra cheap micro fan for cooling the PWM daughter board sounds like a calf in distress or a small coffee grinder
depending on what mood it's in, I unplugged mine. Replacement is easy enough. ( -1 star for that one)

I have had this amp for a couple months now and I have pushed a single L7 12" til I blew it. Then I purchased two L5 12"s and it pushed those with no problem. Now, I have two L7 12" hooked to it and it sounds great running at 2 ohms in parralel. This amp is small and can push anything you throw at it, minus the solo-x's of course. But great amp.

It blew my expectations out of the water. It's the best amp i've ever owned. Solid, heavy, huge gain, huge sound. I'm slappin 2 12" Kicker VX with this amp @ 1 ohm. Killer, just killer. I could blow some serious ear drums with a quick bass test from this great amp.

Blaupunkt THA-555 PnP 5/4/3 Channel 840W Amplifier Review

I installed this system to my BMW 530D E60 and it does improve the stock stereo (which was poor) performance noticeably, but still not up to my other car installation (cost similarly) performance. To be fair, I did not rule out if it is due to the (poor?) stock speakers or the head unit itself (but too bad BMW dictate the type of head unit...).
Pros:
* No wire cutting, just connect (using an optional compatible wire hardness) to the stock stereo.
* Remote bass boost feature is useful.
* Noticeably improve stock stereo system.
Cons:
* You need to search for the compatible wire hardness (sold separately) yourselves according to the vehicle's year and made and I think you would need to buy from other sources. Go for the 5 meter version to install the amp at the trunk. Installing the amp under the carpet as recommended is a bad idea. I tried it: the amp will thermal-shut within 15-30 minutes of play and your front passenger won't like the bulge of the carpet.
* Not really a DIY job. Be careful when disconnect anything from the head unit. Make sure you connect back all the wires that do not "relate" to speakers. In my case, I did not connect back the bluetooth wiring, thinking it was part of the job of "disconnecting everything".
* Even set to low pass 40Hz, the sub bass is obviously not low enough, maybe still around >100Hz judging from my other car installation. You will feel a stronger "boom" then stock though. Maybe due to the stock speaker response??
* High is not high even set to the highest high pass. Some slight improvement if a passive high pass filters are added to the twitters. I have tried several brands of twitters but of no help.
* Be careful with the input level setting. Too high will introduce whining noise to the system.
* Overall sound is a little muddy. The frequencies are quite mixed up, unlike my other installation, where you can clearly sense output from low, mid and high. Staging is OK though.
* The Aux input design is flawed, or is there a reason they did it that way?. If you are connecting your MP3 player to Aux, you will not get bass boost (sub not responding). You will have to connect to the RCA input with parallel connection to the front, rear and sub using your own cable & 2-1 connectors - really messy looking wiring.
I am yet to experiment, but here are what I think anyone else shall be doing:
* Buy the 5m wire hardness from Blaupunkt since you don't want to mess around with the stock wiring. The wire hardness is well labeled so connection to other brand amps won't be a problem.
* Buy one mono amp to drive the subs and one 4-channel amp to drive front/rear speakers. Both amps must support high level (speakers wire) input. Best if the amp support or include good active cross-over.
Or, if you want the original look of your car (without something hanging in the trunk etc)
* The stock system already have amps driving all the speakers. You just have to locate them (your mechanics shall be able to tell you) and replace them with better amps.
I will update if I ever try other amps but I feel it shall be the better option from my previous experience.

I Love the processor. I just wish I knew how to use it better. I learn more about it everyday. I used this with 2 amplifiers. 1 for the sub and the other for a four channel amp to my door speakers. This works as a processor even for an aftermarket stereo. This is usually used as an integration system for stock stereos to get an aftermarket sound. Love it considering the local stereo shop was asking 500 for theirs. Got it on amazon for around 260.

This the last style amp Sony came out with that is worth a you know what. It is a true Class D amp. I even had it tested back in 02. I have to find the paper but at 14.4v at 1ohm it cranked out a little over 1200watts. 970 something of pure undistorted power. I have one of these in both my cars now. On 3 12's I hit 156.6db in a competition. I have ran this amp for 4 plus years without a prob. I have even dropped it to a 0.6 load for a month to see if it would handle it and it did without a hiccup. I would reccommend this for anybody who is on a budget and need some power!!

Bought this for my son's 2001 Dakota QC, for his birthday. He was very happy with it and so was I. Service Price, and shipping were excellent from ShipSound. The amp even arrived early.
We were trying to obtain a better, more powerful amp to replace the factory Infinity amp behind the passenger side kick panel. The largest obstacle was finding a quality amp in a small enough size to fit properly. We wanted the stealthy factory look. This amp worked great! With its great performance, efficiency and modest power requirements, we were even able to feed it using the factory power and ground wires. We made a custom sheet-metal mount to use the factory mounting points, connected the factory wiring, and reaped the benefits of a job well done. The sound is phenomenal!! My son is driving aftermarket Infinity separates (6.5) in the front (high-pass) and Kicker woofers (6.5) in the back (low-pass), both in the factory locations. It all looks factory but sounds like a $2000 custom install......even through the factory Infinity head unit.....excellent dynamic range and VERY clean! I am so impressed, I will soon be ordering the same amp for my 2003 Dakota QC.

I purchased this amp on Feb 19th, I got it on Feb the 22nd no hassles, gimics, or long wait. When i got this amp it took me all of 30 mins to hook it up to my new 2 12" MTX JH55 Jackhammer Subwoofers. At first i had a cheap amp pushing these subs, it was a SPX Audio Pro 400 watt amp. It was pushing half the power that the subs put out together which is 800 watts RMS, Until the amp overheated and the power supply was shot on the circut board. The Birth Sheet for this amp says it puts out (850 watts x1 at 2ohms). The product details says 800 watts, But the way this amp makes my subs sound is just RIDICULOUS!!! I HAVE TO LITERASLLLY TURN IT DOWN EVERYWHERE I GO! So if you want a Damn Good amp for a great price i would reccomend this amp to anyone..... P.S. NOT FOR SENSITIVE EARS!! Thanks!!!

this amp i received today, bear in mind, i only had it installed for 2 minutes before i cranked it up, (bass boost only about halfway.) and it shut off and went into protection mode. i checked all the fuses and felt if it was hot already and no dice, i restarted it 3 times and let it sit for 30 minutes, no dice, so i just assumed the internals are faulty because bear in mind the power cables attached are rated at most for 1600 watts, so the amp was not receiving full power, and the sub i had attached (power acoustik 15 inch mofo) was pushing pretty hard, but not full power either, the only thing i can think of is that something on the internals came loose during shipping or i just got a bum amp, either way i was pissed to finally feed my sub the power it really needs (upgrading from a pioneer 760 watt) to a 5000 watt, but from the 3 minutes it worked (minus the 2 minutes i spent searching for a cd to listen to) so it only worked for about 60 seconds.
just for it to friggin die on me before i left the parkinglot. how embarrassing. a big old bad amp that supposedly shakes houses cant even push 1 15 at half power? pfft. the replacement better last me a long time if boss wants to convince me they are a good brand. i had faith, but its diminishing for every word i have to type on this stupid review.
i strongly believe the amp was just faulty and that i just got a lemon and that this amp truely is a good buy.
***UPDATE*** April 1st, No joke,
i received the replacement yesterday and have tuned it myself, the amp works good and hits the highs and mids really well, but for some reason struggles with the lows :/ which is why i intentionally bought this item, my old Pioneer 760 watt hit the lows harder with my MOFO 15inch sub. which doesnt make sense....
i assume the 8 gauge wire feeding my 5k watt (more like 2300 actual watts) is choking my amp, but i would assume since the same amount of power is being fed to my 5k watt boss as the power being fed to my 760 watt Pioneer, that i would at least expect the same performance on the lows. but its noticeably less...
im assuming once i upgrade to a 4 gauge (this thing cant handle true 0 gauge like a 5k watt should, not that it needs a wire that big) that it will perform lows better, i was contemplating getting a second battery near the amp to stabilize the system but my local audio stores steered me away because price wise a 10 farad cap would be the same price and on top of that it was designed to handle the abrupt and high stress of a large system like mine, and i think a battery in the back seat of my truck would look ugly anyways,
but for the price i paid for this amp, when i upgrade the cables and cap, it better be 2 or 3 times louder because right now theres not much to brag about when you say you have a 5k watt and when you turn it up all the way it doesnt rattle your friends car next to you as much, when they felt the lows from your previous amp already, which shook it more. and was rated at less then a 3rd the power of this amp... >_< will update one more time after the cap and cable installs! wish me luck!
***UPDATE*** April 6th
the replacement amp is still pumping strong, but an annoyance for me since my amp is right behind my driver seat in my truck, is when its cold out, the stupid fan makes annoying noises that are loud, my solution to getting it to stop is to continually tap on the top of the amp, then it stops, its only done this twice, i think its because the fan always runs even when the amp isnt hot so the bearings in the fan make the noise till its warmed up, but this amp hits pretty hard! the 1 15 inch isnt enough and the amp can handle more so im going to find a replacement for my 10 inch box i have in the garage to hook up as well, seeing as its running strong and all im not too worried about the amp giving out :) YAY BOSS FOR GIVING ME SOMETHING THAT WORKS OKAY! just fix the annoying squealing of the fan when its cold and you have yourself a masterpiece. minus the fact that the amp is called OUTLAW... im sorry but thats a corny name, also the remote bass wire that you can run through the vehicle so you dont have to adjust it at the amp, has a VERY bright blue led that blinds anyone you point it at, and on top of that the knob is bigger then the plastic casing (which is rounded) so you cant really mount it anywhere but i just have it wedged in my seat so its not annoying for me, i actually like the fact that the inside of my truck is lit up by my amp. :D
